My Encaustic Workshops

I teach Encaustic Worshops in my Santa Cruz Studio. They are based on what I've learned at the R and F Paints Workshops, only they are much shorter. I am working with very small groups of 4 students, because encaustic work takes a lot of "juice." The electricity requirements are pretty large; we have many hot palettes going, as well as heat guns. The workshop is an overview of many techniques.

What is covered in the workshop:

  • Safety
  • How to make clear medium
  • Preparing the surface of your support
  • Melting the paint
  • Mixing colors
  • Creating smooth or textured surfaces
  • Xerox transfers
  • Collaging various materials
  • Line and edge

Here are a few examples

You can bring materials, which are listed below, however I supply everything you need: brushes and panels and paint, so not to worry!

Bristle or natural hair brushes. You can get cheap ones at San Lorenzo lumber in the paint dept. (synthetic brushes will melt), two or three flat (hake, 1”,2”) or other small flat brushes, and two or three small rounds.. I prefer Hake brushes. Utrecht has very good ones.

I will provide the Panels.

Mark making tools: dental tools, ceramic trimming tools, palette knives, pin tools, etc.

Basic artists tool box: scissors, single edge razors, (utility blades), pencil, masking tape or low tack tape, roll of waxed paper (for wrapping finished work), ruler or straight edge, painting clothes or apron.

One roll of paper towels (Viva's only please, these are THE best for Encaustics)

Collage materials: xerox prints, drawings, handmade papers( small pieces), small pieces of chicken wire or hardware cloth, thread, small metal objects to imbed.
