New Show-The Audacity of Stripes

Just gotta touch 'em

Steve Vorhees and Melyssa Cowles

Connections are magical. Several years ago, I donated a painting to the Cultural Council for their Hearts for the Arts Fundraiser. It was one of my first "spine" paintings. It had an orange ground with an embedded spine. A fellow by the name of Steve Voorhees bought it. He called me and said that he loved the work and wanted a sibling for it. Could I come to his home and see where the painting was hanging. I visited his treasure of a house-a gorgeous gem! This orange painting was on a lime green venetian plaster wall! Yahoo! I painted a sibling for him, a beautiful red painting with an embedded spine! Steve's sense of style and design is wild and fearless. The man loves color, texture, sculpture, and is a great supporter of the arts. Last year an architect and interior designer from Phoenix, visited his showroom, Santa Cruz Stoves and Fireplaces buying for the Sanctuary Spa in Phoenix. He invited them to his house, where they saw my work. They immediately came to my studio-and bought 9 paintings for the spa. I continue to get inquiries about my work from people who stay at the beautiful Camelback mountain retreat. Earlier this year, Melyssa Cowles, Steve's partner took my Encaustic Workshop. Melyssa is the director of Artworx Gallery, at the stove and fireplace shop, which duals as a showroom and gallery. They promote and sustain local artists in the greater Bay area. They have an enormous amount of wall space-perfect for large work. They hosted a lovely opening for me, with great food, wine, music courtesy of Robert. flowers and photos courtesy of Barbara Littlefield. Attending the opening were architect and builder, Martha and John Fiorovich, who invited me to show my work at their Live the Green contemporary house, designed for the Architecture Tour on May 24. Great how one connection can lead to another!

I really like the clean look of your new work. Sometime would you post a photo of the back? How do you mount them?

D, I'm so very proud of you! The ways that one connection lead to another are not by accident...all these roads intersecting and connecting are lovely "meant to be's". Congratulations on these well deserved recognitions of your talent. Barb Cabot
