Joseph Goldberg Restrospective at MoNA

Joseph Goldberg
Jeweled Earth, 2003
encaustic and linen over wood panel
24 x 30

Yesterday I drove up to La Conner with three SDA pals from Whidbey to the Museum of Northwest Art to see the Joseph Goldberg Retrospective. This is a mid-career exhibition of Goldberg's encaustic paintings, drawings and wall sculpture. I had seen a large Goldberg show several years ago at the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. The U W press has published a wonderful book, entitled Joseph Goldberg: Jeweled Earth, with an essay by Nathan Kernan and interview by Regina Hackett. Two of the paintings in the show were on loan from the collection of two Whidbey Island women, one of whom is Lynn Hays. I saw Lynn's encaustic paintings in 2001 at a Day of the Dead Show in Langley. I was so inspired and viscerally moved by her work, that it sent me on my quest to learn about this technique.
